review 1: I didn't come away from this book knowing the exact kind of school system I want my children to go into, but it was a good book to think about the pros and cons of different styles of school systems. I definitely came away preferring the way the Finish school system operates over the others - but I had that preference going in too regardless of it producing better test scores on this FISA test I've never heard of.I wouldn't read this as an exhaustive research work on how schools should be run, but as an anecdotal tale of different ways these educational systems can work and the results they tend to produce. I don't think any one system can be the best for everyone, and with children approaching school age I'm currently more interested in what will work best for them spec... moreifically, whereas educators might be interested in the system that can benefit the greatest number of kids.
review 2: An interesting take on the American educational system's objectives and values from an 'outside' perspective. This writer isn't of the education-ilk (which she is very clear about) but provides a perspective that educators and laymen alike can get something out of. From this book: the #1 thing that contributes to childhood literacy: the personal reading habits of their parents. IF YOU HAVE A KID READ A BOOK ONCE IN A WHILE. less

Tells a lot about what we do wrong in education and some things that work better.
