review 1: In my view, this novel deserves neither the prestigious literary prize it got in Italy, not the scathing reviews it got on Goodreads. It is based on a rather clever idea, and then, unfortunately, painted by numbers. Altogether, the picture it gives of immigration and immigrants in Rome is rather too pat, By and large, I admire nothing more than writers who can paint a complex picture in very few pages, as I think brevity is a virtue, but in this case, everything remains too sketchy, not because of the format, but because the writer seems to aim for a fable-like quality which he isn't able to quite deliver. That said, there are some slight surprises in every chapter, just enough to keep an open-minded reader going.
review 2: Mi è piaciuto anche se non l'ho trov... moreato eccezionale. Ha alcune caratteristiche che in genere gradisco come la narrazione affidata a più personaggi anziché ad uno solo. Penso che questo sia proprio uno dei pregi del romanzo perché l'autore da voce ad una serie di personaggi che svelano le proprie manie, le proprie sofferenze, soprattutto il proprio rapporto con il paese che li ospita. Il delitto e la scomparsa del presunto colpevole sono soltanto un pretesto per aprire una finestra sulla realtà multietnica di Piazza Vittorio e anche sull'intolleranza che è insita negli animi di chi vive a contatto con culture, usi e costumi diversi dai propri. Non sono d'accordo con chi ha detto che gli italiani non ne escono molto bene. In realtà ogni personaggio, italiano o straniero che sia, vede l'altro attraverso una serie di pregiudizi e cliché. Il difetto più grande di questo romanzo è nella conclusione che ho trovato davvero frettolosa e poco coinvolgente. In meno di dieci pagine viene svelato il mistero che aleggia intorno al presunto assassino e al delitto. less
