review 1: Wow, beautifully written story set during Partition, following Hindu twin boys, a young Sikh girl, and an elderly Muslim doctor. The writing is stunning, and the images of post-partition brutality in India and Pakistan are harrowing and simply unforgettable. My one issue with this book was the narrator, who I found distracting -- although I don't know if the book would have worked in the same way without him.
review 2: I stumbled across this writer in the "new arrivals" section of the library when Abundance came out, and I'm very happy to go back and read his first novel. ... moreross the newly created border between India and Pakistan. From the tenderness of a Brahmin father holding his newborn son with a heart defect to the cold calculation of a Sikh father who decides to kill his wife and daughters to keep them from being raped, the emotions of these characters reveal Majmudar's sensitivity to the human heart. His background as a poet is also evident in this short novel, where compact turns of phrase open up vistas into whole worlds and flashes of metaphor draw surprising relationships between disparate ideas. As a first novel, Partitions has one or two clunky bits. But I read it in one sitting, invested in the characters and mesmerized by the prose. less
