review 1: Much of the story in The Abundance has been told before, in other books. A couple from India moves to the U.S. and makes their life here. The children are "Americanized", and are successful. The kids may/may not reject their parents "cultural" background which included struggles, family back in India, trying to fit in etc. A family tragedy reminds the children, of what's really important, and they rally back together as a family until. Told with a distinct difference because of the East Indian influence, the writer develops flawed characters that are very human, and likable in their flaws. The story ends up revolving around cooking, and the sharing of recipes, but not enough emphasis I think, was made of this except near the end of the book. The family in this book is welc... moreoming you into their lives, and makes you want to stay.
review 2: I don't know, y'all -- lately I am having such trouble finding readable contemporary Indian-American fiction. So many tend to have so many layers that it is nearly impossible to tie all the threads together into a cohesive, comprehendable story. Such is the case with The Abundance by Majmudar. While the plot is something I feel many of us could grapple with (mother diagnosed with cancer, adult children), the total immersion into who-sis and what-sis without explanation was baffling to me. I have read Indian-American fiction that does an excellent job of capturing the convulated familial ties without confusing a reader who is not from such families. I wish those writers would come back! less

Great book! Being an Indian i could relate to a lot of things. It is a very slow read though!

Stunning! Incredibly this story told by a dying wife and mother was authored by a man.

Would have been better with more cooking and less dying.
