review 1: It's 1966 and Kate sees a pair of pictures of Tinker Gray, an old acquaintance, in an artist's showing taken in 1937-1938. In one he is well-heeled and in the other he is down on his luck. The rest of the book is Kate's recollection of 1938, how she met Tinker, how he went from riches to rags, and all the people she met in between. I really enjoyed this book. A lot of it was the pitch-perfect dialogue and a sympathetic heroine. But it think it was mostly the narrator, Rebecca Lowman, who pulled off a really great performance. A great match between reader and story. Highly recommended!

... mores place in the late 1930s it feels like current day New York City. The dialog is smart and the characters fully realized. I liked how Katey was transported back almost thirty years by a photograph and that she kept the memories private. less
