review 1: This was unexpectedly good. Really, a beautiful, sometimes bittersweet, story. I wished more people read stories like this, to learn or just to have a glimpse, even a fictional one like this, about the struggle of gay couples; also to see that at the end of the day it's just a couple, with two people loving each other no matter gender. It makes me really sad, because we know this stuff happens in real life, even more in sports with men, and the homophobia and machismo that's there, even know in the XXI century.
review 2: 4-4.5 starsXander wants two things in the world: basketball and Chris. And he has them. But in the world of professional sport there is no room for 'faggots'...This was the wonderful, angsty and moving story of Xander and Chris, who we follow
... more for 15 years from their first accidental meeting at 14 till the peak of their NBA career in their late twenties.Xander, a giant of a man, never expects anything from the world. All he wants is Chris and Basketball. The fact that he actually has both is amazing to him, it's more than he ever believed he could have.Xander is a child at heart, I wanted to hug him and protect him from the big bad world. Unfortunately that is also the one thing about him, that pulls this story down a tiny bit. Because even at 28 I was still hearing 14 year old Xander in his head. He never really did grow up to me.I loved that we followed the boys from adolescence and into adulthood. It made me incredibly invested in them and their relationship. I think the third thursday of the month game hurt me almost as much as it hurt them!I am not really a sportsfan, but the transfer incident made me wonder: would this really be happening? I doubt it! The incident behind the transfer was not public, there was no media frenzy to cause it, it seems a bit far fetched that the team owners would split up this amazing duo, solely on the words of a bigoted coach... But it didn't pull me out of the story too much and I understood why the author made it happen.I am a HEA junkie, and although I actually liked the open ending, I still feel a tiny bit cheated. I would have loved an epilogue, that would have made this complete for me.All in all a wonderful read, that I can warmly recommend. I read it in one sitting, was up until 2.30 am to finish it. And will probably re-read it at a later stage. less
