review 1: Sad and beautiful all at once. This is a tale about a small-minded town and it's residents and the bravery of one young man to stand up to them all and admit to being gay - despite everything that has happened.I loved Peter's character - how he was true to himself, even when it would have been so easy to deny he was gay. I loved the way he took care of Bodi, but still let him be his own person and I loved his capacity to forgive and move on. Michael was Peter's hero, so it was really heart-rending to see that illusion shattered and then rebuilt.As with all Amy Lane books, this isn't an easy relationship, but that just makes the HEA all the more believable.
review 2: This story was Amy Lane, Queen of Angst, at her best. Looking at my friend’s reviews, it appe... morears that people either loved this story or hated it. I’m on the side of loved it. It was an in-your-face, emotional, head over heels tumble of angst, fear, grief, hate, and love. The MCs, Peter and Bodi, were hurt deeply by events that occurred in the past – events that drove a stake through the love that Bodi shared with Peter’s cousin Michael and severed Michael’s connection with Peter as well. As the story opens, we learn that Michael has been killed in action overseas. The author filled in the backstory in bits and pieces throughout the book. I have to admit that, in the beginning, I found the switches back and forth confusing, however, I adapted and thoroughly enjoyed the journey as Peter’s love for Bodi and Bodi’s love for Peter finally evolved and matured. Their joint grief for Michael and the way in which they chose to set his soul free was unique and fraught with deep emotional pain. Amy Lane evokes my emotions better than those in my “real life”. I highly recommend this book. less
