review 1: An excellent thriller and an excellent plea against death penalty. One can give very little away without making telling everything. What the sleeve notes tell already is the following: A man is arrested in Sweden for an assault. The investigation shows that he used a false identity. He appears to be a convicted murderer who died during his stay in Dath Row in Ohio, USA. The questions that come up, and are answered, include the following: How can a dead man show up alive? Is it possible to escape from Death row, if you are dead and buried? Was the man in Stockholm guilty of murder? Can he be extradited to the US, being officially dead and if so, does Sweden extradite persons that are to be executed in the coutry they are sent to? Is the man arrested in Stockholm guilty? Wi... morell he be executed? And so on. The book tells the story very well and answers all questions. It is very well written and an extremely good read. There are enough twists and surprises, up to the very last page!
review 2: This book had a great plot: opponents of capital punishment smuggle a wrongly convicted man out of prison in Ohio prior to his execution. When he is arrested for attempted murder/aggravated assault of a drunken lout on a ferry crossing into Stockholm, Detective Ewert Grens has to figure out who he is. There was even a good political battle as to whether Sweden would capitulate and extradite a man in contravention of its policy against capital punishment; however, Sweden and Grens both wimp out, leaving retribution as a task for someone else. Disappointing performance by both, but a clever ending. 3.5 stars. less
