Commissario Montalbano
review 1: An Inspector Montalbano novel. Montalbano is a police inspector in Sicily. In this one, he meets a strange young woman and drives her home when the road has been blocked by a mudslide. Later, she disappears, but it turns out her name, and everything she said about herself, is essentially false, but dovetails together with some events revolving around a dead man found in a dinghy, and the owners of a yacht that found them. A very interesting novel, fast, readable, with a lot of humor. Montalbano likes his food, so there's a lot about that, and the characters are well drawn. One thing that was odd to me, is that Montalbano has an assistant named Catarella. All Catarella's dialog is rendered in a dialect, like this example, chosen at random: "Wha'ss wrong is when I gotta tell ... morelike to hizzonerthe c'mishner, iss like I'm c'mittin' a mortal sin." To me, these renderings really placed a roadblock in the book: are they renderings of a specific dialect in Italian? Are they supposed to be a specific dialect in English? I couldn't' tell, and thus the dialectical renderings didn't tell me anything about this character, except he spoke very differently than everyone else. Is he lower class? From a different part of Italy? I couldn't tell. That said, this was an entertaining novel, and I'll probably pick up more by the author.
review 2: More of Montalbano. His eccentric behaviour seems to get more and more odd (telling enormous lies in order to get out of doing things only leads to bigger problems later, but he never seems to learn). I worry about all the wonderful meals prepared for him which he doesn't seem to get round to eating due to amorous complications and other interruptions! The curious episode in which he gets caught up here, complete with falling for another young woman, is a bit difficult to follow in places, and although he does finally work out what is going on the denouement is not exactly a success. less

Montalbano gets quirkier with age but he retains his appeal - perhaps because I am ageing with him!

I have read all of the books in this series. This was not one of my favorites.

Typical Montalbano but I must admit he did piss me off a bit in this story.
