review 1: Sicilian Inspector Montalbano encounters a woman whose car is about to fall into a washout in the road created by a storm the previous night. She claims to be the niece of the owner of a luxury yacht scheduled to dock that afternoon in Vigàta. Not long after, the yacht does dock carrying the corpse of a man the crew found floating in a small boat. In the course of the investigation he encounters Laura, a lieutenant in the harbor office, who tests his loyalty to Livia, his long-time and long-distance emotional interest. The three women as well as Montalbano are well drawn characters and the plot also makes the book a worthwhile read.
review 2: Montalbano,now 58 & feeling the strain of dealing with the daily problems of life,love & 'la cucina',falls for the d... moreivine Laura Belladonna ,in his investigation of a murder involving a body floating outside the harbour of Vigata.The plot unravels slowly but engrossingly - Mimi Augello gets to demonstrate his vaunted carnal arts on another Livia (not Salvo's on-off-on Livia from Boccadasse!) & Fazio & Catarella make telling contributions to the difficult case.Montalbano has run-ins with a variety of authority figures & ends-up,as near a broken man as he has ever been in the series so far; this is his 14th adventure,& retirement beckons...but Salvo Montalbano is good for a few more rounds yet! Truly, a diamond 'tipo' with real blood, & many facets! less
