review 1: I've been on a crime novel kick here lately, whether it be true crime or crime fiction, so while I was browsing through books on Amazon, I stumbled across this one and thought it sounded very interesting and I'm very glad that I read it. This is the first novel from Andrew Kaufman that I have read and I must say, he really knows how to weave an interesting story together and do it in a way to where he doesn't beat around the bush and put too much exposition into the story. I felt like nothing in this book was filler, but also even though everything was straight and to the point, it never felt rushed or forced either.I really felt for the character of Patrick Bannister. The pain and heartache that he went through was conveyed very convincingly throughout the book as he trie... mores to solve the murder of a child and also deal with his own personal demons that were inflicted upon him from his abusive mother.I also found the relationship of Patrick and fellow reporter CJ to have a good and natural chemistry between them and despite their oftentimes deadly situations, there are some comedic moments that pop up, that breaks up the serious tone/situations that they are faced with. There are some cliched moments in this book, but overall there are some really nice twists and turns that it takes you on as it gets to it's satisfying and bitter sweet resolution. I look forward to checking out more work from Andrew Kaufman and now that I have looked into his work a little further, I was ecstatic to see that there is another book that revolves around the Patrick Banister character called Darkness Shadows that I am definitely going to check out soon.
review 2: I bought this book after I heard Andrew Kauffman speak at the OWFI (OWFI.org) writing conference. By the way - if you are a writer, and have an opportunity - LISTEN to him speak. He has a great message. I made the mistake of starting this book that same afternoon and missed several conference sessions to stay in and read - it was THAT GOOD! What I liked best: The MC Patrick is a refreshing character. I especially enjoyed that he did not feel like a boiler-plated hero. Patrick had unattractive character flaws and past circumstances that he worked to overcome throughout the book. These aspects made him feel more real. I thought the author did a good job of showing us the rich psychological landscape of Patrick's inner psyche without overloading the reader. His use of flashbacks flowed seamlessly throughout the work. The situation was believable. The action was well paced.I *did* wonder a bit about the antagonist's motivations and psyche. The author did such a great job "showing" us what was going on in Patrick's world, I would have enjoyed his perspective on the antagonist's inner world.NICE job. Can't wait to read the second book in the series (which I have waiting on me so I'll finish this review)! less
