review 1: I found this book browsing the shelves at my local library. I'm not familiar with this author's work but I wasn't disappointed. The book was a bit predictable, I figured out one of the major plot points, rather early on in the book. But the way the author was able to depict the relationships between the characters was not only believable, it took my mind off trying to figure out the minor details and focus on just how messed up these characters were. It's a bit disturbing how one character's actions affected so many lives and so much of the story, even though he was barely in the story at all. The relationship between Patrick and his mother was intense and I went through a wide range of emotions. She made me angry, disgusted and at the end sad. I realized she was as much a... more victim of Warren as were Patrick, Jean, Dennis and Ronald Lucas. I'm not sure I'd recommend this book to many but for me it was a good solid read.
review 2: I became totally engrossed in "The Lion, the Lamb, and the Hunted." This novel is often termed a psychological thriller, but it read more like a murder mystery to me even though Patrick Bannister is a news reporter rather than a detective. Kaufman weaved an engaging story complete with credible characters, intriguing plot developments, and a few twists/surprises along the way that I was unable to predict. I found this book extremely easy to read and the pacing kept my interest level on edge. My only complaint (and it cost a star) is the sappy ending that seemed - to me - appliqued and completely out of character with everything that came before it. less
