review 1: There is a dark melancholy atmosphere throughout this story. To me, all of the characters had an element of weirdness about them. Even the elderly mother of Ben {who was so motherly towards Randy and Trevor fixing them tea and cookies} has an oddness in her mannerism and response, I thought. The main characters were as haunted by the past as they were haunted by ghosts. There was nothing spooky or scary about this story to me, creepy yes. The characters and the ghost were all creepy..

... moreally captures his characters with depth, feeling and nuance. The dialogue is spot on. It was a little distracting for me – the fact that I couldn’t readily identify the fictional town of Grimshaw – perhaps it is a melange of small towns in Perth County – though I am leaning toward St. Marys or Mitchell. I understand this book has been optioned for a film – if there is a God, Edward Burns will play Trev in the movie. less
