review 1: This is one of the kids' favorite book in my elementary library! It flies off the shelf! So, I had to grab it quickly before it flew out the door again! What a hilarious book! It's got the rhyminess and expansive drawings of Dr Seuss with the quirky style of pictures with story of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, with an almost graphic novel feel, rolled into a fun-to-read package! I whizzed right through it; I can see how young readers will not be able to put this book down until the very last page! (I think my favorite character was Willy the Worm, no offense to those who love Ruth on a Scooter or the oversize mouse.) :)
review 2: When I first read through this book I didn't like it. The stories were ultra short and not held together in any apparently cohesive way
... more, nor did they have any layered meanings. But then I read it with a child I tutor once a week, and my opinion took a big turn. The student is in third grade but at about a first grade reading level and trying to improve. He immediately chose this book from my stack based on the cover. There was something funny about it to him and his eyes brightened. When he started reading I totally understood the appeal. The first story is the one about the portly cow that blows up, and I admit it's so goofy it's funny. Before being all bandaged up and recovering at the end, you see the simple black and white scribble drawings of the cow going "kapow." My student said "Oh, there's his tail and there's his nose over there!" and with a giggle he said, "I've seen enough" and flipped the page. He kept reading longer than he ever has in one sitting, finishing seven of the ten stories in the book. When he stumbled on a word, the drawings gave him clues as did the rhyming pattern. It was wonderful to see him reading happily and to see how the clever author made that happen. Would I love to see another book with cumulative chapters about one character done this way? Absolutely. I'm now an Andy Griffiths fan. less
