review 1: Coming of age novel set in a small town in Kentucky. Charmaine's starting junior high, which is difficult enough, but she's also got "problems at home." Her father, who has a reputation as a preacher and prophet, has suffered a mental breakdown, leaving Charmaine and her mother in despair and poverty. Charmaine is surrounded by many creepy characters, and very few safe people. Her faith is sorely tested. She also finds herself in some terribly disturbing situations. Some themes from A Wrinkle in Time appear, which was interesting. Are people just a little crazier in the south?
review 2: I love this book! I've written only one other review ever (and I read A LOT), but I felt compelled to speak up for this stunning work. Pneuman's writing is breathtaking. T
... morehe whole novel is just pitch perfect. For me, it is one of those few novels that, while fiction, helps me to understand myself and my experience better than any non-fiction self-help book ever could. After reading other reviews, I recognize that my passion for it stems in part from the fact that I am familiar with its place and its people, that I marinated for years in a world similar to Charmaine's. If you did, too, this book is not to be missed. less
