review 1: Ok.I liked the book because I'm a sucker for romance novels and I read a lot of them and I felt empathy with the main character, Cherry. The subject I can relate to, being an overweight woman myself, with a lot of bad experiences because of people's (and more specifically, men) (mis)conceptions about love and physical appearance; blame our Western society or the media. The fact is there and we can't cover it.Cherry as a character can be annoying, but then again, after having lived a lifetime of insults and bullying, you can really get to be a wreck when it comes to self esteem, so that didn't bother me. After passing that aspect, I found her charming. Rick's a bit of a prick, he has no tact most of the time and he confused her with a prostitute (gimme a break) but I found ... morehim kind of nice afterwards, when he showed he really loved Cherry. The Aussie English didn't bother me either, I actually loved it, and neither did the syntax (although that part got me messy in occasions). There are elements that support my giving this book two stars: even if it's a formulaic plot because it's Romance, I think some scenes were exaggerated and take out or proportion (like the teenagers verbally attacking Cherry, Annabelle's rampage towards Cherry), or the scene in which Rick tells Cherry he didn't use a condom and she tells him she took the morning after pill (So easy, huh?). I also expected at least a bit more of hospital life, more work scenarios (I know it's not Grey's Anatomy, but it's important for the setting). OH, and one thing... Can anyone tell me which planet is Rick from? because in this one, and FOR REAL, men do not choose fat women over any other slimmer one. Here, as Cherry said, I blame "experience" for this remark. Last notes: I liked it although it's not so good; it's a nice fairy tale ending with a cute lie. Fantasy is always nice.
review 2: It's a very light weight read with a thin plot. The characters and motivation were not very well developed and the timeline rather rushed so that it seemed all rather unrealistic. This was a shame as the essence of the story had some merit and a more fully developed telling of the story might have been quite satisfying. I would only recommend it if you are really looking for a quick, distracting read that doesn't require any brain power! less
