review 1: This book captured my attention in a way that few books with "love story" themes rarely manage--most likely because it is far more than a simple love story. Every character contributes to a complex look at the life of an angst ridden artist facing failing finances, her parents' failing health & her own fears about connecting with life & building emotionally intimate friendships . I loved this book & will read it again in the future.
review 2: This is my first book by this author, and I just have to assume that she won the Pulitzer for some very different work! While there was nothing offensive here, I found it to be a very predictable, paint-by-numbers romance. The characters are either lovely or horrible. Everyone has one warm parent and one cold or non-prese... morent parent. The romantic misunderstandings are telegraphed miles in advance...Nothing wrong with that, but a Bailey's Prize Nomination?? Really? less
