A Black Sheep Knitting Mystery
review 1: or two and a half stars. The plot was pretty good, and I liked the characters, but I got tired of the tedious 'over-explaining'. For example:' "We're from Worcester," Rita replied mentioning a medium-size city in central Massachusetts, about an hour west of Boston.' Is it remotely relevant to the story the Worcester is medium-size, or even in central Massachusetts, or that it was an hour west of Boston? Nope. Even if it was put in to explain the USA to folks like me who live in Australia, it just felt unnecessary. And there were quite a few similar examples. Luckily, the characters and the plot were engaging enough for me to finish the book. But I think a bit of tighter editing would have been a great improvement.
review 2: This novel was my favorite to date.
... more I enjoyed the storyline, the location, the familiar characters mixed with the new ones and it was a good solid story.Maggie Messina, owner of the 'Black Sheep' yarn store in Plum Harbor is offered a job teaching a weekend group of knitting classes tuned into the holistic view of life. What makes the opportunity even nicer, is she can have a cottage and invite her weekly knitting group of friends to join her.The Hotel is owned by a former Psychiatrist, Dr. Max Flemming. His is a sad story indeed. He wrote a book about his trials and re-birth as a holistic follower. Maggie finds she is teaching classes such as 'Random Knitting" and "Mindful Knitting." The group is very skeptical about what they term 'New Age' practices but find good in various hikes and body treatments. Maggie finds herself liking the classes. The only glitch is a man is killed during the hike to meditate on the mountain. Then to everyone's shock and terror, Dr. Max is murdered! The ladies must figure this out. The book was very well put together and I liked Maggie taking over the lead versus Lucy. It felt more natural to me. I look forward to the next novel by Ms. Canadeo. less
