The Murder Notebooks
review 1: Returning to London after five years at a boarding school, Rose reunites with her "step brother" Josh. Their parents (not married) were police officers whose disappearance remains unsolved. Rose lives with her aloof, wealthy grandmother who she never knew about until her mother disappeared. There is little affection between them. Josh spends his free time trying to figure out what happened to their parents. Rose attends school and acts surly and unfriendly most of the time, alluding to some incident(s) that happened at the boarding school as the root. Rose is accidentally drawn into the murder of two classmates and when the police don't seem to be moving very quickly towards solving the cases, she decides to take the investigation into her own hands. Meanwhile, Josh makes ... moresome headway finding information about their parents. Throw in lots of teen angst, a murder mystery with few red herrings, and a parallel missing parents case and you have the gist. As the narrator, Rose us unlikeable and, unknowable. She reveals very little about herself. The murder mystery is thin and, ultimately, offers a dissatisfying conclusion. The parents' story is equally obtuse and offers little reward for patient readers. This is the first in the series so perhaps it is meant to have a slow build. I think few teen readers will see it through. The plot is just not a page turner and the characters don't engage you.
review 2: I found this book quite intriguing. The character I Rose I thought was a little irritating and dull. The storyline of the 'who dunnit' murder scenario was brilliantly played out making you want to read on. Personally my about it's character was Joshua. He is more open with his emotions and has an amazing determination to find out what ha happens with his parents. Rose on the other hand is a little preoccupied with the fact that she has managed to find to dead bodies in the course of a week. She is so caught up in being a witness to the murders that she doesn't stop to realise that the disappearance of her parents may be liked in with the unlikely murders of two people from her college. Although the character of Rose annoyed me intensely I actually quite enjoyed reading this novel. less

I was a little bit confused at the end, but I liked it. I'll most likely read the sequel.
