review 1: Okay, this book was fine. It wasn't overly sentimental. I always love sappy stuff while I'm reading a book, but as soon as I'm done I'm like, "Eww, that was gross." It's kind of like porn in that way. The love story developed a lot more slowly than most YA novels, I felt, and that was nice, but at the same time, I didn't feel like Calder really presented himself to Lily as a lovable person. He never said or did anything particularly kind or funny or special. It's like, he turns out to be a merman, but then that's all he has going for him in terms of being an interesting person. I liked Lily well enough, especially when she was all not into Calder. You know it doesn't bode well for a story when you respect a character more for NOT liking the love interest. She was ... morelike, "You're creepy, and I instinctively sense danger and strive to separate and protect myself." You never see that kind of thing in YA, and it was rock solid. But then she's like, "Nah, we're okay, let's do this thing," and then falls in love with him for literally no reason. Did she fall in love with him because she wanted him to go to that party with her and he didn't? What? The shift from Lily avoiding/mistrusting Calder to loving him happened in a weird and confusing and not totally believable way. I felt the same way about Calder's shift from psycho-murderer to good guy. At first he's going to use Lily to kill her father. Then he loves Lily, so he's not going to use her, but he's still going to kill her father. Then he's not going to kill her father, because it would make Lily feel bad. And then there's this crappy writing at the end. I mean, WTF is happening in this scene? Calder is on the ground, dying, unable to move, even though the water is like right there. Maris comes to taunt him and he's like, "Let me die in peace, Maris, I'm totally dying." Then Lily comes down, and he stands right up, and they go down to the water and he's totally fine. What's going on!? Why all those near-death dramatics, Calder!? That was such ridiculous writing I couldn't even believe it.
review 2: Calder gets a call to come home to Lake Superior. He hates the cold and chooses warmer waters all winter. Calder and his 3 sisters share a bond and are linked. However the mermaids you thought you knew in fairy tales, are nothing like these mermaids. They need to feed on human emotion by absorbing it. They are unhappy by nature and kill their victims by leaving nothing but an empty shell left. Calder's sisters called Calder back early, because they found the man responsible for their mothers death.Calder has to get close to the man named Hancock and earn his trust. Calder decides his best bet is to get close to one of his daughters. Lily is the daughter closes to Calder's age. He is immediately drawn to her. He likes her spunk. Calder soon becomes torn by his feelings for Lily and his loyalty to his mothers memory.I loved this book. It was so refreshing to have a mermaid book from a guys point of view. There are so many levels of deception. I also love how the author did not make the transformation from mermaid to human easy. It was descriptive and not pleasant. I also liked the banter between Lily and Calder and the fact that he believes he is the perfect specimen and she gives him a run for his money so to speak. This is a great mythological read and I am highly recommending this series. I am giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. A must read for mermaid fans! less

Fun book to read if you have ties to the Apostle Islands and Bayfield.
