review 1: I really disliked Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. It had all the pent up buzz of a great Gothic read but was just a disappointment. I suppose I read the sequel because I still want the Gothic mystery I was promised and thought that perhaps Between the Spark and Burn would actually deliver it. No, not really. Every once in a while, though, there is a spark of magic and atmosphere in Between the Spark and the Burn, even if the characters and plot are murky. I'll recommend the two books to YA readers who want a very light paranormal read.
review 2: Actual rating: 3.5. I definitely did not passionately love this sequel as I loved its predecessor, Between the Devil and the Deep, Blue Sea. One of my favorite things about the first book was the setting -
... more the small town of Echo, Maine and the dilapidated mansion, Citizen Kane. Sadly, only the beginning and end of this one take place at Citizen Kane. Instead, Violet, Neely, Luke, and Sunshine head out on a road trip from/to hell on a quest to find River and Brodie. Fortunately, that slow, sexy, horrific, gothic tone still oozes from the pages. I'm assuming there will be a third and I will be reading it! less
