review 1: A series of connected short stories set in the fictional Indian coastal city of Kittur. Although there is a Kittur in India, it is an inland village sharing only its name and country with the town/city in the book. I read this after reading The White Tiger, and it looks at life in poverty in much the same way, within the tighter constraints of the short story format. The city of Kittur is made realistic by very rich detail and descriptions, including historical information about its past connection with Tipu Sultan. Recommended.
review 2: This book tells stories about the people of the fictional Indian city of Kittur. The stories are raw, the characters real and flawed, and the setting gritty. This is very much a study of class divisions in India, seen from
... more the point of view of the underclasses. You can feel their struggles, the unfairness they deal with. While this is very well written and evocative, I found it didn't quite work as a novel - it is really a short story collection. And as individual short stories, I didn't find there was enough development, enough twists in narrative. There were one or two that really touched me - the last one about the Murali the communist in particular - but many felt a little flat to me. I'd be interested to read more by Adiga though, he has a definite talent for description. less

Numerous short stories about Indians abusing other Indians in the 1980s. Good writing though.
