review 1: A vivid series of short stories set in the Indian city of Kittur between the assassinations of Indira and Rajiv Gandhi in the late 80s/early 90s. It evocatively focuses on issues of caste, corruption, poverty, inequality and fateful incidents that can change lives. The format is a little frustrating as most of the tales are left hanging with a deep sense of foreboding, but one is always grateful for the insight.
review 2: Although enjoyable I found this lacked the compelling narrative shown in 'The White Tiger'. I still find this author fascinating as I have a love of discovering difficult cultures through literature and I still praise him highly. I think part of the problem is that the bar was set so high with white tiger that he failed to impress as much here
... more. I enjoyed the collection of mixed characters between the Ghandi assassinations, although I wish it was made more obvious they weren't in chronological order earlier rather than at the end, I was left a bit confused and piecing together the stories. Still recommended. less

One of the best recent novels I've read in a long time. Very evocative of Dubliners.
