review 1: A beautiful young woman from Australia is courted by charming, wealthy Englishman, Sir Brackenstall. After their wedding, she is isolated from her friends and family, and his pleasant facade drops. Lady Brackenstall is subjected to continual physical and mental abuse at her husband's hands with only the emotional support of her maid. When Sir Brackenstall is found with his head bashed in by a fireplace poker, Holmes is brought in to solve the mystery.A dear uncle of my husband was an attorney and a judge. He was fond of saying that courts don't dispense justice--they dispense law. Holmes wasn't constricted by law and often used his own discretion in meting out justice. In this case, Holmes turns to Watson and designates him "jury." When Watson gives the sentence of ... more"not guilty," Holmes removes himself from the investigation, and they set the murderer free with the caveat that if someone else were to be arrested for the murder, they would have to bring forth his part in the incident.
review 2: I always enjoy the Holmes stories that have our hero act out of character at a surface level. In the Abbey Grange, Holmes solves the mystery and lets the culprit go. He doesn't interfere, but fails to share his observations with the official police, knowing this will certainly let the killer go free.It is through such apparently uncharacteristic behavior that our appreciation of the Holmes character is deepened. Holmes believes the killer is, if not justified, at least understandable. Holmes's sense of justice is much more profoundly the driver of his action than fidelity to the police or to the attention and credit he receives upon successful resolution of his cases. less
