review 1: This series was something I checked out in desperation from my library's e-reserves. I didn't even know what steampunk was at the time. I read the book straight through, and all of the sequels as well. I'm impressed by the hero's unique gifts, his troubled youth and his struggle to find acceptance. Plus, the imaginative gadgets and alternate history elements introduced me to what I love most about this genre.
review 2: This book was an interesting take on a character i grew up with. Modo is the main character and has a small baby he is saved from gypsy's and brought to live in a lavish house with Mr Socrates. Modo is a bit deformed he has a large hump on his back and a disfigured face. But he also has the special ability to change his appearance by will power.
... moreDuring his upbringing he is trained to be a spy for Mr Socrates to help save Britannia from Collapse from the Clock Work Guild who are an organization of evil people. The story takes place in London in 1860 and onwards and it has fantastic steam punk vibe to it. It is defiantly different to any book i have read but i did love it. I really enjoyed the characters especially Modo because i felt like i had a soft spot for him because even though he had a pretty nice upbringing it you felt his pain of him bot having a proper family and how he felt about him self. This is a wonderful book and a great read. There where a few parts that did slow down a bit but you just have to push through that and you will get straight back to the wonderful story that is The Hunchback Assignments. less
