review 1: I am just waiting for this day to express my feeling about this book. It is just so good. It is about detective, the poverty, the way people live in America in 1893. The way the characters speak, the way the story goes is fast moving. And this book gives me a lot of small lessons but important. And also the characters in this story really touch my heart. It is such a good book. I'm just feeling proud of myself that I picked this book of out the shelves without any ideas of the author or recommendation. You must read it!!!!
review 2: The streets in NewYork in 1893 is crowded, filthy, and dangerous. Thirteen-year-old boy Maks is a danish immigrant and sells newspaper, The World. They call the boys who sell the newspaper 'newsies'. Maks's family is very poor, and
... moreare very urgent to pay the rent of the house his family is living. Maks's Papa and Agnes, Maks's sister is working in a shoe factory and his mom is doing a laundry job. One day, Maks is selling a newspaper, shouting the headlines. On the way home with his eight cents he earned, he meets Bruno and the gangs. They are called 'Plug Uglies'. They are very famous for beating the newsies up and taking away their money. So when Bruno tries to beat Maks up, this street girl appears and chases the Plug Uglies away with her stick and saves Maks. Maks feels very thankful for the girl and asks her name. 'Willa' is her name. Maks asks Willa lots and lots of question. And Willa is annoyed. Anyways, Maks bring Willa to his house and first, Willa didn't wanted to stay. But Maks begs her to stay and eat dinner. Maks tells his Mama and Papa about what happened on the street and Maks's sibling, Jacob, Ryker and Agnes gets interested in Willa and also asks questions about her. Than, Papa tells the family the Emma, the eldest daughter in the family got arrested because she stole the gold watch from a guest in the 'Waldorf' hotel that she is working in. Because it is dangerous out in the streets, Willa get to sleep in Maks's house. Willa had no home, or families. Willa's mom died in the 'wasting disease' and her dad.. She doesn't know where his dad is. Willa thinks he's also dead. She has been living on the streets after her mom dies. So Willa gets to stay and becomes the family of Maks's. Maks's family is very busy. Papa is trying to find a lawyer for the trials and Maks is also wanting to find one. Maks and his family thinks Emma did not steal the gold watch, so he is trying to find a proof that Emma is innocent. Maks and Willa visits 'The Tombs'. It's kind of a prison that holds people who needs a trial and people who is guilty. Emma is locked in the cells and Maks gives her some food. Maks asks if Emma stealed or not and Emma says she didn't. Maks finds this detective named Mr. Donck. He first did not wanted to help but he begs for help and Mr. Donck sends him to Waldorf hotel and arrange a meeting with a hotel detective, Mr. Packwood. So Maks goes to the hotel and meet Mr. Packwood. And before he goes to the hotel, he goes to visit Emma and asks her if anything unusual happened to her the day she was arreseted. Emma says that when she was cleaning the room number 912, this gentlemen went in. He said that he would compliment her to the hotel manager that she is working very well, and asked her name. Eventually, Emma told the man her name. Maks gets an order from Mr. Packwood that he should be working in the bellboy job and search for some clues. So when he is doing the serving for the guests, he find Willa's dad, Mr. Brunswick. Mr. Brunswick is trying to take over the World, the famous newspaper. That why he is ordering Bruno to lead the gangs and get the newsies. Bruno has to do whatever Mr. Brunswick tells him to do, because Mr. Brunswick has Bruno's picture. If Bruno does not do what Mr. Brunswick tells him to do, Mr. Brunswick will give Bruno's picture to the police and Bruno will get arreseted. Maks goes to Mr. Doncks's office and tells what happened and what new clues he've got and also tells him, that nobody in the hotel actually got the compliment about Emma. So Maks thinks that somebody purposely went to Emma and asked her name and saying that he would give the manager fake compliment. In the girls domitary where all the maids sleep, there is a nametag for every bed. So he might have purposely put the gold chains under Emma's pillow. When Maks is in the hotel another day with Willa, because Willa wants to see her dad, Bruno intrudes in the hotel lobby, searching for Mr. Brunswick crazily, swinging his shovel, Mr. Brunswick comes out. Bruno snatches Mr. Brunswick's pistol and shoots Mr. Brunswick. Mr. Packwood also shoots Bruno after. So they are both dead and they find the missing gold watch from Mr. Brunswick's pocket. Emma goes to the trial and the judge said she was innocent. Willa got to live with Maks and his family and became one of his family. less
