Midnight Magic
review 1: King Claudio of Pergamontio outlaws magic because he fears it. Master Mangus performs magic in Pergamontio. So, when treasonous papers appear in the kingdom, the king accuses Mangus of "writing" them with magic. How else would hundreds of completely identical papers be made? Mangus' servant, Fabrezio, tries to prove his master's innocence by collecting the papers and asking questions about their origin. His efforts land both himself and his master in prison. In the dark dungeons, Fabrezio begins to learn the truth. He meets Maria whose parents printed the papers on their press. Fabrezio and Maria overhear a clandestine conversation and find a dead body. Racing against time, they arrange an illusion that will reveal the real traitor to the c... morerown.
review 2: I started reading this book because I assigned a Mystery Book Report to my 4th grade students in October. The book has a strong beginning - I was intrigued by the setting and really liked the main character. I began to lose interest by the middle of the book - it seemed like the author was trying too hard to create suspense. I think I would have liked it more if it had been shorter by about 50 pages. less
