review 1: I'm torn between a 3 and 4 on this one. The story was pretty interesting, despite the fact that even a vague knowledge of American history will spoil one of the big "surprises" of the plot. I liked the conflict. It gave me a better feel for some of the action of the American Revolution, and the author wove his character into the real events well. The writing was almost poetic in places. On the other hand, I didn't connect much with the main character. Her motivations and feelings were stated over and over, but not in a way that helped me feel them myself, so it wasn't a really engaging read for me.
review 2: I thoroughly enjoy fiction that makes me want to know more about a topic; now I need to read Steve Sheinkin's book on Benedict Arnold. The writing in this
... more was exquisite, and the reader in the audio version was excellent. One of the main things I will remember about the book is the portrayal of girls/women- as being ignored. Sophia would not have been able to do many of the things she did had she been male. I felt that the book got bogged down a bit during her walk/journey north, but overall found it thought-provoking. The conditions in the prisons, especially contrasting the treatment of Sophia's brother and Andre, is one I will not forget. The book also portrays the confusion of opposing sides in a conflict. less

not nearly as good as some of his other works; but better than a lot of children's books.

The history elements were interesting but the plot sort of muddled along.
