review 1: I skimmed a lot while reading this book. Maybe if I'd been more into the whole experiment and shifters want to take over the world while being cruel and evil plot I would have enjoyed this book. But I didn't, and unfortunately even the characters didn't help.Cliff, who I always thought would be like Bobby, has a lot of emotional baggage. He had a hard life and is extremely bitter and angry about it which is why he doesn't want a mate and why he's such an ass all the time (especially to Remus in the beginning), but he gets over it quickly thanks to the mate bond and the urge to have sex. He also acts crazy stupid in the beginning, I know he was wounded and not thinking straight but he was acting stupid and suicidal and I just wanted to punch him. Remus is a little better, I... more like how calm he was, but he did some stupid things too, like leaving his bag of herbs behind at least twice when he needed it (frankly why he left it in the car is beyond me but anyway). And then there was that whole thing with Mark that left me feeling empty, I just didn't care. One of my favorite things about series is that I get to see bonds between friends and family. I mistakenly thought that Emmett and Cliff would finally talk about things and maybe see where their relationship goes from there (I also thought maybe there would be closure to Emmett and Sabin's story line (Emmett tells parents truth, Sabin finds out if he has any kids out there, etc)), but nope that didn't happen. Cliff had some self loathing thoughts about how Emmett would never want a brother like him and that was it. At least Remus talks to his son and eventually Cliff gets to meet Remus' family and pack. For the last (?) book in the series I'm disappointed, but mostly because it continues that story line I hated from the previous book and makes it even more frustrating. I hope I like Bailey Bradford's next book better.
review 2: First review of 2014 AND first GR review of this book.. yayThis was a somewhat fun, sexy, powerful (characters) book to read. Cliff meets his match in his mate. He who shall remain unnamed... i know that's sooo wrong.. but my first guesses were correct I'm just not going to confirm that for anyone who's not read it yet.For all that Cliff is portrayed as super powerful mojo and all, he gets a little slap and tickle (without the tickle) from the Fates to knock him down a peg or two. While Mate is a big deal and powerful in own right, he does make Cliff look kind of ... bad? no not that but like a child learning his craft and not quite there yet? I just felt like Cliff was... Less.As far as Cliff fighting the mating.. well we don't want immediate capitulation or easy now do we? The fact that though we have a bit of foreplay and time to come to grips before getting to the goodies with several interruptions and revelations on the way...As suspected of the possible relationship between Cliff and Emmett.. I did NOT get closer on this. I wanted to see this explored and revelations happen but noooo.. perhaps to be explored more in the next book? Plus the possibilities from the consequences of learning more about mulit-shifter parent conception.. I don't know.. this may be more to chew off then can be be delivered.. only time will tell less
