review 1: This was a 2.75 star book. The British setting and charming young constable Lily Wentworth made it enjoyable as did the historic references to the late Russian czars family and to the Fenian movement. I found the budding relationship between Joe Sanidlands and Lily charming, but much of the rest of the book moved very slowly and even the twist at the ending seemed somewhat incomplete rather than suprising
review 2: I found this a somewhat odd installment in the Sandilands series. It's a step backward in time for one thing (which makes me wonder if Cleverly thought of a 1930's or 40's storyline that requires this for a backstory?), and it's more of a thriller than a mystery. Joe Sandilands doesn't quite seem in the proper character for much of the book as well. ... moreIt took me quite a while to really get into it, but then when I did, I was swept along. The story kept me guessing to the end in addition to wondering if/when we'll see some of these characters again. So, after a rocky start, I felt compelled to give the book 4 stars. less
