review 1: I've enjoyed all the Benjamin January books, and thought this was an especially good one. Loved the history -- seeing Washington DC circa 1838 was fascinating. Loved the part about the origins of baseball. Adored the inclusion of Marse Eddie! That was a treat, and I chuckled over some of the sly little references.Also, I really enjoyed learning more about Chloe and Henri and Minou, and how their relationship works, even though it's kind of strange to all of them (and especially to Benjamin, observing from the outside).The mystery was an interesting puzzle, and there was danger and excitement for the characters as they solved it. I didn't figure it out until nearly the end, but that's not really why I read these stories. I read them because I love the characters and I'm fas... morecinated by the world they live in.Definitely worth reading, owning, and reading again.
review 2: "Good man Friday" is the 12th in Barbara Hambly's Benjamin January series. It is 1838 and Ben, his sister and niece, who are free blacks, are pretending to be married so they can go to D.C. with Henri, the sister's protector and his wife. They are to find a missing person. Meanwhile Ben finds D.C. very different from New Orleans, and the fear of slave grabbers is very pervasive. Any black out after dark could be stolen and sold. John Quincey Adams and Edgar Allan Poe are both characters in the book. Baseball also plays a big role. These books are so historically accurate, Hambly is so gifted at making you feel you are there, that I highly recommend them. But I also suggest that they be read in order as there is a huge backstory! less
