review 1: I liked this book because of the dialogue and the characters. It is a concoction of the author's imagination but the story line provides a path for the feisty young Appalachian woman to rise up from her life of poverty and hardship to seek a path of knowledge. What could be more virtuous than that? Don't be fooled though, this character is a chain smoking, almost adulteress, but you can't help but find her charming and believable. The story starts long after our heroine became pregnant in high school and married the wrong person because he was the father of the baby. To make matters worse, she stays with this guy and is heavily under the influence of his domineering parents. Lo and behold, a miracle descends upon the holler, and the story unfolds. I listened to the audio v... moreersion of this book, which is read by Ms. Kingsolver herself. She does a good job of reading the book, and I enjoyed "visiting" that part of the world, mainly because of the main character's strength and determination.
review 2: I know the reviews appeared to have a whole range of ratings for better and worse; however, personally I was transported into a world of nature, science and human relations. This book is my introduction to Barbara Kingsolver. I am looking forward to reading other books authored by her. It is an easy, fast read and the characters have depth. The story flows and has interest. One of those stories that made you wish you were there. less

A bit long but beautiful descriptions. Better than The Poisonwood Bible
