review 1: For sure, this is NOT one of Barbara Taylor Bradford's best efforts. A very odd approach to a holocaust survivor story as this issue doesn't even surface until late in the book. In fact there are several stories being told & none of them is really completed. Also, there isn't any closure about Deborah's (the mother) peculiar behavior other than she's anti-Semitic & won't even consider that her mother is Jewish & survived the holocaust. The narration & some of the dialogue is frequently repeated. The use of Istanbul as a background to much of the story was very interesting as I realized when reading that I really know little of that part of the world.
review 2: In the paperback I bought for 50 cents, someone had written "a beautiful story. Don't let the jo
... moreurnal parts spoil the beauty of it" Actually, the journal parts of the book are the only reason I gave this book a 2 rating. If not for the journal, I would have given it a lower rating. The dialogue in much of the book is stilted and not very well written. The best part of the book is Bradford's description of Istanbul, Turkey. Made me want to visit. less

Sorry! Just wasn't good to me. Couldn't get into it. Read until 220 and finally put it down. :(

A little sappy and not really even believable at times. Enjoyable nonetheless.

Again BTB needs to go back to her early writing style. Always like reading BTB

I too thought the "love story" a bit hard to swallow.
