review 1: Although I’ve read several John Rain books, they weren't in any particular order and other than Rain, I did not recall the recurring characters in this particular book. Not a problem—Barry Eisler captured my attention from the first page to the last. And with other Rain books, The Detachment is not geared to the squeamish. There is plenty of violence minus the gory details, plenty of intrigue minus the obvious foreshadowing. But it’s the character development that I found most fascinating—what drives political assassins to kill without conscience yet struggle with concerns of the inevitable retributions for their actions. Quality writing, excellent plot. Looking forward to more good reads from Barry Eisler.
review 2: This was my first experience with J
... moreohn Rain. But fortunately for me, no backstory was really necessary. I am familiar with Ben Treven, who was the character I looked forward to reading about. Ben was more of a side character, without much substance or interaction. I was pleased with the character of Dox. He's my favorite, which I wouldn't be surprised to hear from other readers. I plan on going back to the beginning and meeting John Rain. less
