review 1: I completely loved this book. I couldn't put it down. This wasn't a surprise since I've liked all of Eisler's John Rain novels (I can't say that about the short stories - see my reviews of those if you're interested). This book takes us back to the beginning of Rain's CIA career. It's 1972 and he's fresh out of the war in Vietnam and living in Japan doing basic CIA work. He gets himself into a predicament that not only forces him to learn the trade craft that he'll use to become the expert assassin that he is in later books, but also forces him to leave Japan. I wouldn't suggest that someone new to the John Rain series pick this one up first. Part of what makes this story great is comparing who Rain was at the beginning to who he turned out to be in earlier books - those w... moreritten about his later life. It's that comparison that helps make this book a standout. Eisler's detailed story is loaded with culture, history and great characters. It really puts other troubled-assassin books to shame.
review 2: This latest book in the John Rain thriller series is actually a prequel to the rest of the books. This story goes into the background of how John Rain, a Vietnam veteran, becomes the hardened and skilled assassin for hire. I really enjoyed seeing Rain's transformation, especially, how he learns from mistakes and develops his special skill of making his kills look like death by natural causes. If you are a John Rain fan, you'll love this, and if you aren't, this book is a great way to get you started. I was REALLY impressed by the audiobook narration, performed by Barry Eisler. It's rare for a talented author to be a good narrator, but he definitely made this story come alive with a wide range of voices and accents. less

This is the origin story of Rain. Either start the series here or read it to see how it all started.

Great read. I'm usually leery of prequels. This one revealed a lot of what John Rain is about.

I really like the John Rain character. I'll read Eisler again, for certain.
