review 1: I've picked this book up once a year since its release. I had the odd luck of stumbling onto it just as it was published and as a fan of this genre, I was immediately sucked in. I won't bother writing another back-cover synopsis or go into details regarding this read. However, I will say this: It is by far my most favorite of the genre and my battered copy has traveled thousands of miles across the US. The only thing it is missing is Mr. Tripp's signature.
review 2: I am really up in air on this one. Not sure if I would recommend it. Ben Tripp has an excellent style of writing. His words flow smoothly and he is very descriptive, so the reader always has a vivid picture of events. Herein lies my issues. I do not like the lead character. Not one bit. BT
... more had an opportunity to create a strong female lead with a military background. Instead, he opted for a standoffish, little bitch with major people issues. Why does every soldier returning from overseas have to suffer PTSD or have unforgiving nightmares or be so fucked up in the head they can't socialize normally? I don't believe they all are like this but writers feel this makes for an intriguing character. I disagree. Sheriff Danielle Adelman is a terrible character. She is selfish, hateful, dangerous and self serving. When a characters acts without thinking, to the point of killing an innocent person and really not showing remorse, well, this should not be your hero. And, yes, this actually occurs in this story. And, ends what should have been a promising character with a potentially excellent story arc. The first third of the novel is excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed the onset of the disease and how it progressed. I also enjoyed how the characters initially came together. There are several great characters in this work. Patrick and Weaver, Amy and then Wulf, are well conceived, well thought out and well written characters. It's to bad, they take a backseat to a complete waste of paper, Sheriff Danny. When Danny goes off in search of a missing sister, leaving the group she was in charge of alone and unprotected, she becomes an even less interesting character. The entire story line involving her from this point is boring and pointless. A complete snoozefest. The real story takes place with the group of survivors Danny leaves behind. These segments of the novel are excellent. The inclusion of outside forces, creating stress and mayhem, really amp up the story. The characters in this group are compelling and believable. This is where the reader becomes emotionally invested. These are the folks you like most and pray for their survival. Again, I did enjoy parts of this, but overall, Im not sure I would recommend it. I def. would not return for a sequel. less
