review 1: I picked this up not only because it looked interesting, but because it's set in Oregon. This also means I was a little more critical about the setting and authenticity than the average reader would be. While I enjoyed the premise, and learning about the boys and their dreams and how the war affects them, it bothered me that Bend was apparently the "rural" setting of this novel. Bend is three times as big as the town I live in, and it's nothing like the rural, factory-driven town characterized in this graphic novel. That little aspect may have soured the overall novel for me. Ah well.
review 2: Really a 3 1/2 but the message was so strong I couldn't bear to give it a three.Very intense. It was a quick read, but it packed a lot in that quick read. It was a littl... moree hard to keep track of some of the characters as some of them looked very similar. It seems to be a very small town, and almost every adult male is in the military, but there are a couple of times when you wonder how small it is since the boys get into the bars so easily. The end is so dark and bleak it just causes shivers to run up and down my back.Some reviews say that this is basically an ad for the military, but I would say its quite the opposite. It shows how hopeless people's lives can be when they don't know what's happening. It shows how strong people need to appear when they just want to curl up and cry. It doesn't show the people who join the military because they really want to, because their family really wants them to. This is not a positive book, but its good. less
