Adventures with Jane Austen and her Legacy
review 1: To put it plainly, Pattillo needs a better critique group. This story had a lot of potential and there were some great elements, even though we were reading main characters who, once again, weren't "into Austen that much" (much like "Mr Darcy Broke My Heart"), which was a bit disappointing. However...the ending was really great! Some picky points: - Ellen is described at every turn as being "sensible"...so very sensible that even the reader feels weary of her sensible shoes and sensible clothes and sensible way of packing. (Note: Sensible and practical does NOT equal homely and dowdy.) - I'm going to go a step further and stereotype, but being from the area, I cannot understand how someone living in Dallas (not a suburb mentioned, but The Big D) does not know how to groom... more her own eyebrows. - And how hot is hot in England during this trip? Everyone seems to be fading and sweltering, but the two Dodge sisters are from Texas (where summers easily reach above 100 degrees)...and one is living in Atlanta! So to complain about England's heat (without actually saying what the temps were) doesn't seem to add up.
review 2: Better than the other book I read by this author. Two slightly antagonistic sisters follow their dying mother's wishes and go on a Jane Austen walking tour in England. Their goals are: find a place to scatter their mother's ashes, learn to get along better, find love (in Sense and Sensibility scenarios), and figure out what to do with their mother's last unexpected legacy to them: a diary purported to be Cassandra Austen's.The Formidables, a secret society dedicated to keeping Jane Austen's private stuff private, enter the picture just as they did in the author's previous books. less
