Adventures with Jane Austen and her Legacy
review 1: There is some history in this book that is interesting. The story itself, not so much. The main character blamed Austen for the failure in her love life, and for her high expectations of romance. Besides the fact that I think she's wrong, I didn't like that trait. Austen tells stories with flawed characters, who work to overcome them, but they're not perfect, which was implied. Also, in the end, I felt that Emma was being offered everything she wanted, but instead of moving forward in her life, she chose to go home and live with her parents... It left me wondering how smart she really was! I'm not saying move in with Adam if she's not ready for that, but she had an offer that would have allowed her to stay in London, and to write. I thought that was her ... moregoal.
review 2: Though I've never read a Jane Austen novel, Pattillo's novel has rekindled my interest in reading an Austen novel. I enjoyed Emma's Austen quest of discovery. I enjoyed the references to one of the greatest classical writers of all time and how it intertwined with a story of self-discovery. At times, I felt as though I was brought back in time -- to when Austen was alive -- and experience her struggle and sacrifice. This was a quick and light read. less
