Adventures with Jane Austen and her Legacy
review 1: I really enjoyed this book. I would rank this just above a summer fluff book. I am a Jane Austen fan but not an over the top one. Like in the book when Emma is talking about the Mansfield Park home and said the Rushworths when in reality it's the Bertrams. I didn't really care but I did catch it. Anyways, I loved how it was a mystery and what a well thought out story. There are so many mysteries of Jane Austen and her life, you could have some liberties. but she is hard to write about because people are so critical of her.I liked the story Emma is chasing and just like her I wanted to know who Jack was. I thought Emma's background story was too much of a distraction from the main story but I think it did add dimension to Emma. So it was a necessary thing. But Edward and Ad... moream and Barry are just too much for me.I absolutely loved her trips to the different Austen sites and how each thing that happens to her at these places grounds her and brings her back to who she wants to be or who she wanted to be before Edward. She is still not all back but she is a better person after her journey through this book. I really enjoyed this book and it was a fun read. And it was good for my Jane Austen nerdyness. I love how the book connects all the Jane Austen novels into this book too, even my favorite of them all, Persuasion. I got my Austen fix with this book.
review 2: More like 3.5***, but if I generally like it, I round up. Even though I finished this last night, I still have mixed feelings about this book. There were some choices made by the author which I felt were a bit contrived, but overall I enjoyed reading about a woman attempting to figure out her life while whirling through Jane Austen's stomping grounds. I am such a sucker for anyone who reveres books and one of my favorite quotes from the novel alluded to this very sentiment. The solace passionate readers find in books and their favorite authors will always draw my attention. However, this does not compare to the peace and comfort we find in God, so while the author hints at a "possible" God this was not a focus. Really appreciated the Author's Confessions at the end. Good for a light read on a free afternoon. less
