review 1: Another Netgalley book. I absolutely adored Derek and Elizabeth! Derek is smitten with Elizabeth and in a moment of lust kisses her in the garden at a ball when she followed him outside. The problem with this...they were overheard by Lady Danvers, the biggest gossip of the ton. In order to prevent Lady Danvers from ruining her, Elizabeth lies that the man she was with was her betrothed and as Lady Danvers had nit seen the man, she believed Elizabeth, grudgingly, but insisted she be intruduced to said fiance' as soon as the engagement was announced. Elizabeth informed her family of what Derek had done and the lie she had told, which resulted in Derek being confronted and told he had to marry Elizabeth. Not wanting to be coerced into a marriage he did not want-he believed El... moreizabeth set him up-Derek set out to find a way out of the marriage. What Derek finds out about Elizabeth and familial connection to a sordid time from his brothers past sets him on the path to make Elizabeth pay. Only after he has made a huge mistake does Derek learn the real truth of what happen with his brother and Elizabeths sister. The author weaves a wonderful story of lust, lies and passion. The secondary characters of Alex, Charlotte, Catherine, Missy and James provide good support to the main characters. I am reading the next book in this series, An Heir of Deception, which takes up where this book left off, only covering the lives of Charlotte and Alex.
review 2: This is the first story I've read by Ms. Kendall, and I have to say that I was disappointed in it. It is the story of Miss Elizabeth Smith and her encounter with Viscount Derek Creswell. When they are caught in the garden sharing a passionate kiss by the ton's worst gossip, Elizabeth blurts out that they are engaged. It's the only thing she can think of to save her reputation. Thus begins her first lie in the story. I love Regency romances, but this one didn't always seem to follow the rules of the period. I don't believe it would have been proper for a young lady to go for a carriage ride with a gentlemen she's just met without an escort, especially not in a closed carriage, but I could be wrong about this.I didn't make any connection with Elizabeth's character. She didn't come across as the naive virgin she was supposed to be and Derek's character was downright mean. He goes to extraordinary lengths to embarrass and humiliate her and Elizabeth doesn't take offense. She also seems powerless to control her own lust when she's around him, certainly not the actions of a proper young lady of the period. There was not a sweet romance between two people who start off on the wrong foot, but one of manipulation and deception. I was also disappointed when the book ended at 66% on my Kindle. I thought there would be more and not the convenient quick wrap-up in the epilogue. In the end I didn't like either Elizabeth or Derek. I'm glad I got this book for free because otherwise I would have been sorely disappointed if I had wasted anything more than my time. less

This was an okay book. I loved the tension between Elizabeth and Derek but I couldn't believe the situations Elizabeth kept finding herself in in. Derek has problems with Elizabeth's family and doesn't realize it when he first meets Elizabeth in her first season in London. After Elizabeth gets caught in an inappropriate situation by an older female she comes up with a lie to try and save her dignity and her family's. Derek is caught up with his feelings for Elizabeth but also the fact that Elizabeth's family tried to entrap his brother into marrying Elizabeth's older sister Madaline. After paying money to Elizabeth's family, Derek holds contempt on the family. Can Derek over look the fact of who Elizabeth's family is or will he lose Elizabeth and his heart?

Beverley is one of my favorite authors. She writes some of the best plot ideas and knows how to make them come to life. Elizabeth is out for her first Season. Derek, Lord Creswell, is interested in her. That's when life gets interesting. With sparks between Derek and Elizabeth and daggers between Derek and Elizabeth's family things heat up fast. Then Derek learns the truth from the past. They have become some of my favorite characters. Please give this book a try and see for yourself that they belong together.
