review 1: I really enjoyed this book, for the most part. Ian and Maggie are great characters full of grit and spunk, and it was fun to follow along on their journey. My only real complaint is sort of twofold: I wanted more of the romance and less of the info dumping. It's Great that significant historical figures were mentioned and that Ms. Jenkins has obviously done her homework on the time period. However, getting mini history lessons in the middle of a romance novel got tiring really fast. At a certain point it detracted from the story, because it pulled me straight out of the action. It came across as lectures in the middle of the plot, and I wish the information had been handled better, or that the author had had more faith in her readers to do their own research if they were i... morenterested in learning more about a historical figure, occurrence, or law mentioned.
review 2: This woman’s novels, and especially her historical romances, NEVER EVER disappoint me! Miss Jenkins has a remarkable way of bringing characters to life, while breathing such purpose and meaning into their stories. When Maggie Freeman is arrested for the accidental death of a prominent white man, she is put in the care of Deputy Marshall Vance Bigelow, recognized as the former outlaw simply called, Preacher. Since the death of her parents at the tender age of twelve, Maggie has been on her own and taken care of herself. But with a vigilante mob after her, Maggie must learn to put her trust in the formidable law man if she wants to stay safe from harm.Unassuming yet explosively fierce, Maggie Freeman is a spitfire who doesn’t take too kindly to anyone intent on harming her or taking advantage of her. Maggie is a spirited and intelligent young woman who is used to causing chaos and calamity everywhere she goes. Bounty Hunter, Deputy Marshall, and former outlaw Ian Vance is hardened by his wife’s murder and weary of his past. He wants nothing more than to go home, but finds himself saddled with the care of the unruly Maggie until she can go before a judge. The romance between the two was quite beautiful in its growth and excellently written. The more time they spent with each other, the more each of them became intrigued about the other. Despite his imposing reputation, Vance’s kindness and tenderness toward Maggie draws her curiosity. And Maggie’s bold and unexpected actions constantly confounds and excites Ian at the same time. These two were like ying and yang, but the perfect compliment to one another. While Ian tempered her, Maggie drew him out of himself and got him to open up. As Wendy Williams is won’t to say, “I Love their Love!“The shenanigans and sticky situations they find themselves in along their journey are gripping and entertaining. And their ever present obstacles and the discrimination against them caused by not only their skin, but the defying of expectations, is an all too real reality, even today.Night Hawk is a novel whose story and characters consume you from beginning to end. Entertaining yet powerful, Beverly Jenkins delivers yet another EXCELLENT historical romance! LOVE! less
