review 1: I found myself drawn into this story about an Oprah-like benefactor rescuing a town that was being sold on E-bay to revitalize it into being a community for foster kids and their foster parents. The basis of this book came from a real-life article - "A Place Called Hope" featured in the July 7, 2002 issue of Parade magazine. It read as almost too-good-to-be-true, but I liked this feel-good story and its cast of characters. It earned its 5 stars because I really liked the story and at one point, it made me cry. But, then again, I am feeling rather sappy and emotional right now. I am giving one of her other books a try, but so far, I like Beverly Jenkins enough to check out more of her works. I did pick this book up for 2 reasons - (1) for the February mini-challenge a... morend (2) this is a book club choice for a book club that I am interested in attending. I haven't attended their meeting yet, but I do like the premise for their club - they pick an author and you can read any book by that author of the month. This was a good choice for me to seriously try to make the meeting this month.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book. This story is about a very wealthy divorcee, Ms. Bernadine Brown, who buys a failing town in Henry Adams, Kansas. Most of the town is unhappy about the sale, and very afraid of what the new owners plans to do with it. They're very surprised to find out the woman who bought the town is Black and plans to start a child adoption center and wants volunteers. Most of the people in this town are older people, with no aspirations to raise any more children. To top it off, the children she wants them to adopt are problem children that nobody else seems to want. But Ms. Brown has a big heart, and the transformations that she makes to this broken down old town ends up being a bigger blessing than even she had imagined. less
