review 1: Always a pleasure to read anything from the land of the Fables. Beautiful artwork, sometimes uncomfortable characters (Goldilocks always grosses me out) and wonderfully dark stories with interesting ways of weaving the old together. This one was an interesting murder mystery, truth be told I hadn't read much about Cinderella previously but I will indeed find more later. Lovely and morbidly realistic ending in the way that you can only ever hope for a "good enough" ending in a moral dilemma.
review 2: This is a decent addition to the Fables universe. The prose frame story told from the Mirror's perspective ties all of the elements of the mystery together in a teasing, meandering way, and the underlying philosophical discussion of ownership and oppression, resent
... morement and vengeance, and manipulation and misdirection is a satisfying one. The use of different artists for each glimpse into the story works for me. I found the visual distinction helpful in switching mental tracks; the differing styles give each piece of the narrative a unique attitude. For a mystery story with so many characters, where we're piecing together a puzzle, each piece having its own shape feels appropriate. (And the pieces include some gorgeous artwork, so that doesn't hurt.)Overall, the story doesn't rise to the level of a re-read for me, but it was an enjoyable way to pass a couple of hours. less
