review 1: While this is a novel set in the fictional universe of the Fables comic books, it is extremely accessible to newcomers. While Bill Willingham is not the fanciest prose writer, this is a fast, entertaining read that does a good job weaving elements of various fairy tales into a cohesive single story. The only thing keeping this from receiving top marks from me is it's ambition; it is intended as an aside to the comics, and that narrows the scope considerably. On the other hand, that attitude also keeps the poetic justice of the climax from disappointing.
review 2: I really enjoyed this - it's everything I like about Fables. Taking characters and stories you know and retelling them with embellishments and changes, fitting them into a larger context with other wel... morel-known fairy tales. And then having those characters in the modern world. I also like parallel story telling like this, where the stories in two timelines (past and present) are told throughout the novel. And the suspense was great - kept me guessing what would happen right up to the end.Oh, and this works fine as an introduction to the Fables universe. less
