review 1: This was such an enjoyable read. I was worried with the story being based in the Fables graphic novel universe (which I haven't read) how well it would stand on its own, but my concern was for naught. This story is descriptive without being overbearing. The world is built without you even realizing it's happening. I really liked the backgrounds given to Bo Peep, Peter Piper, and other fairy tale favorites. I definitely plan to explore the Fables universe more now that I've had a taste of it.
review 2: I was concerned at first going in to this novel. Sometimes when a graphic novel writer attempts to write a novel with significantly fewer pictures to help the story along, things fall flat. Not everyone is Neil Gaiman, able to skip along all different sorts o
... moref writing formats and genres. Bil Willingham has succeeded in Peter and Max, a novel based in the world of his popular Fables stories. In Peter and Max, we learn the history of Peter Piper and his older brother Max, the famed Pied Piper. I've always sympathized with the pied piper, after all, he was duped, and in most modern versions of his story the children are taken to a happy faerie land. This is a much darker version of the story, and all sympathy is wiped clean from Max. Which, okay, a story has to have a good guy and a bad guy in it, I get that. But the overwhelming change is a bit too overwhelming, there should be something redeeming in a person that didn't start out in life bad. After all, this is the universe where the Big Bad Wolf and the Gingerbread Witch get a second chance and join the right side. The story moves along at a nice pace, you don't need to have read the comics to understand what's going on, but if you have, you might be a little disappointed in the illustrations, especially the depictions of Frau Totenkinder, who doesn't look at all like herself. A quick read, perfect for a summer time list for anyone who's ever appreciated the darker side of fairy tales, the cautionary tale meant to scare children into good behavior, rather than entertain them. Appropriate for older teens and adults, this fairy tale will be a bit too gruesome and scary for younger kids. less

Decent Fables story, enjoyable narrative and adds to the existing characters of the series.

An amazing story. Almost enough for me to start reading the Fables comics, almost.
