review 1: I listened to this, as it was a one disc, quick listen. I read a lot about nutrition and health anyway, so I thought I would hear what Mr. Harper has to say. I thought he did a good job of cutting through all of the misinformation and conflicting information about how to lead a healthy lifestyle. He simplifies things to what you need to know and it makes sense. While I honestly will probably not follow all of his tenets religiously, this makes you think more about what you eat and do and I will be more conscious of my actions. I decided to get the book, too, just to get a little more info - for example, what is worth buying organic and what is not. I recommend this book.
review 2: In 2003 I was 210 lbs, and I went on a diet and exercise plan to change my body.
... moreOne year later, I was 135 lbs. 11 years later at 48 years old, I am between 115-120 lbs.I've kept the weight off for over a decade, but would love to lose that last 5-10 lbs.I came to the book looking for inspiration in the direction, but I did not find it.The rules themselves were nothing new or special. I managed all my weight loss and kept the weight off following ONLY rules 2, 8, 9 and 17 -- so much for his 20 "non negotiable" rules! As other reviewers have stated, Harper does not have any new advice. These are basic nutritional principles well known and repeated for years if not decades, but they are explained from within Harper's eating paradigm. (Which means as long as you want to eat rabbit food, you can HARPERSIZE! your portions.)There is an one month long eating plan, which is open enough to give you options to pick from each day instead of the usual "on day 5 for breakfast, you WILL eat" type menus. I have not tried his monthly eating plan, but have tried a few select recipes and they were OK.What I didn't like is his annoying way to write like he's talking to you, instead of keeping in mind we are reading a book from a writer and not an email from a friend. I suppose I shouldn't have been too surprised at this though, based on his "Casper the Friendly Trainer" approach on TBL.I also disliked the totally unrealistic and insensitive way he approached living with others who may not share your desire to change your eating habits. He assumes you can just force your family to eat the same thing as you are eating with no negotiation. Harper has no advice for people who have roommates or live in college dorms. Again, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised by this considering his job is to sequester people away from the real world and have them lose weight only with like minded people, away from any real temptations or people who aren't following the same restrictive diet as you are.For someone coming to the world of losing weight and eating healthy for the first time, this book would be a good start. For the rest of us who have read a healthy nutrition book or 12 before, not so much.Overall the book wasn't horrible, but it wasn't impressive or inspiring either.Oh yeah, and Bob -- I WILL be eating carrots after 2 PM! :P less
