review 1: Themes: 1st day of school, loneliness, friendship, bullying, gossipThis book reminded me of the French film The Red Balloon.I love the specific names and signs throughout the book, such as: "Caution - School Zone," "Gotham cafe," "Icarus clock," and "Metropolitan circus." Each illustration is made with lots of checkered and crossing lines. I love that continuity as well as the specific and concentrated use of color , highlighting the things that really matter in life. Such as, friendship. Again, reminding me of The Red Balloon.
review 2: Bluebird is an inspiring wordless picture book detailing the unlikely friendship that develops between Bluebird and an alienated young boy as he walks home from school. The boy’s loneliness, the bird’s loyalty and courage,
... moreand the devastation of bullying are all clearly depicted with the somber colors of grey and blue in graphic cartoonish images created with Adobe Photoshop. With this bittersweet story, Bob Staake opens the doors for serious conversations about bullying, friendship, loyalty and untimely death. less
