review 1: First book by these authors and I enjoyed it so much I bought their other works as soon as I finished this one. This is relatively short, and more explicit than what I was expecting but the love scenes weren't written in a cringe-worthy fashion like Grey's Awakening which was so bad I couldn't make it through the first scene.Stephen is adorable and I liked him right away. Peter was also likable and reminded me a lot of the rakes that populated the historical romances I was so fond of in my teens. The chemistry between Stephen and Peter felt real, and yes there's a bit of insta-love in there, but I can look past that because the characters were drawn well enough that you can see why they're meant for each other.Well written, sweet, sexy historical romp. Was sad to hit the las... moret page.
review 2: No life-or-death struggles, but the romance kept me interestedWarning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS. Rating: 9/10PROS: - The authors put a lot of effort into examining the characters’ thought processes, so I felt I had a good idea of who Peter and Stephen were by the story’s end. I think Devon and Dee did a particularly good job of illustrating the obsession of first Stephen, who has felt forbidden desires before but is just now experiencing them for the first time, and then Peter, who finds himself unable to forget about Stephen when they part after their first meeting.- There’s a marked difference in the two main characters: not just their ages, but their outlooks on life. Stephen is innocent and idealistic, whereas Peter is harsh and pragmatic. It makes their attraction for each other almost painful to read about at times, but it’s certainly sweet.- There aren’t many laugh-out-loud moments, but the story is quietly amusing throughout. For example, when Peter is trying to understand why’s he’s so attracted to Stephen, who is shy and self-conscious and inexperienced, there’s this: “Whatever [Peter] was feeling, be it the start of a fever or a lack of sleep, he must dispel it immediately.”- Even having read quite a few Regency m/m romances before, I found some of the plot elements unique and intriguing. One of them is the idea of people in the 1800s having erotic parties but still acting like perfectly upstanding citizens in public. This is a plot device I haven’t ever come across in a Regency story.CONS:- I’m not typically a big fan of stories in which the characters sleep with each other right away, and the very first scene in this book is a bedroom scene. I do understand that the scene is necessary (and I must admit that the authors do a good job of setting up the emotional angst that results from it), but still. I found the scene cold and impersonal, and it fell extremely flat for me.- (This is weird and really not all that relevant, but I thought I’d share it anyway.) If you’re one of those people who can’t stand the word “moist,” you might stay away from this book. That word is used uncommonly often in this story. I’m not even sure why I noticed it other than the fact that it shows up a lot.Overall comments: I found that the first chapter of this book required rather a large suspension of disbelief, but once I got past that, I enjoyed the story very much. There are several pretty detailed sex scenes, and there’s a decent amount of angst in the story, what with Peter’s resolve to convince Stephen that the two of them aren’t meant to be together. But I didn’t find the sadness overwhelming. less
