review 1: I would love to know what influences Bonnie Jo Campbell has had that enabled her to write this. Gritty and spooky and hopeful, her text offers razor-sharp focus onto the characters and their thoughts, so that even though they initially seem so unlike us, it turns out they're not. Every time a story ended, I felt a little deserted. I wonder if the characters know each other? (There were a few references that made me wonder...)
review 2: This book was intensely gritty for my tastes, but as the sort blurb says, it captures local color in vivid detail. I felt the struggle and cycle of poverty these people endure on a day to day and generation to generation basis. This collection tore at my emotions when I realized that there is no way to stop the cycle of minimal
... more education and low socioeconomic status. These people know no different and therefore don't strive to claw their way out of their own personal hellholes. Far from being stereotyped characters, each one has their own unique view of the world, but none of them can see or even imagine a way out. This collection is the ultimate story of 'keep on keeping on,' for better or worse. less

These are tough as nails short stories. Incredibly well written with an economy of language.

Son, I don't know if you're ready to hear these stories, but mostly, it's vital.

Beautiful writing: gritty stories of rural America.
